Weaving

Earlier this year my friend Elizabeth and I took one of Maryanne Moodie's weaving classes at The School. I decided to treat myself to the class for my birthday and I'm glad I did. Lizzie and I had a really lovely night learning to weave and eating delicious snacks in a beautiful space at The White House, one of the oldest buildings in St Kilda. I've been slowly chipping away at a few different wall hangings since the class and each time the outcome is completely different.

Weaving class!

Some of Maryanne's beautiful weavings on display at the class

I've been sending these ones as gifts to friends but have yet to make one for myself for home. It's always nice to receive something handmade and for some reason I feel better about giving these to people than giving them one of my prints. Giving someone one of your own artworks is kind of difficult because even if they don't love it they still might feel obliged to hang it! I guess I just get a bit nervous about these things which is silly because the artworks I've received from friends are some of my absolute favourite things that I own.

My first woven wall hanging

I really enjoy making these weavings but for me they are completely visual things. There are some amazing weavers whose weavings have more of a conceptual base, while still being beautiful, tactile objects. For me it has reminded me how much I want to get back to printmaking. I spend a lot of time thinking about the work I want to make, but am yet to get around to it. It's because I am really excellent at procrastinating.
